Hello everyone! I'm here to tell you that we finished harvesting the kang kongs! We actually planted them some time ago, at the bottle tree park:

It's called a bottle tree park because the trees growing inside look like giant bottles! Isn't that cool?

What are kang kongs? Kang kongs are vegetables that look like this:
And it looks like this when cooked with chilli:

It can be very delicious. To add on to its taste, Kang kong is rich in iron and therefore, it is a good dietary food for all of us! It is also extremely important that we eat vegetalbes daily!

There are other things that you can eat and grow stronger. such healthy snacks include:

Carrots

Baby carrots are especially delicious because they are much softer and sweeter.

Spinach
Popeye eats spinach to stay strong, muscular and healthy!

Cauliflower

This is very healthy as well!

So remember, do not indulge in potato chips or chocolates! They are bad for you. Eat vegetables as snacks instead!

We went to Bottle Tree Park again on 7 May to check on our land. But oh no! We realised that because of the rain and sun during the week, the soil had become very hard, and all our work from the previous week was wasted.

We had to work very hard under the hot sun to get the land back to being suitable for growing plants. But we all put in our best efforts and it was worth it.

We also learnt how to make compost, which can be used as fertiliser for our land. This is what compost looks like:

It's really very simple to make compost. Here are the steps shown in the Sustained Living Kampung, so that you can make your own compost too!

After that, we discussed making a shelter for our land, so that the rain and sun won't cause the soil to become too hard again.

At the kampung, we also saw the parrots that were living there and took pictures of them. Maybe next time when we go there we will see them again!

We went to the Bottle Tree Park as a class a week ago. We took many pictures over there.

We got rid of all the weeds and loosened the soil.

This is very very important because in a few weeks time, we will be going there to plant seeds. A seed cannot grow into a strong plant without loose soil.

The weeds will fight for nutrients with the plant if the weed is growing in the soil. So, we must pluck out the weeds.

Are you looking forward to seed planting?

We worked very hard and we were very tired. (took us 3 hours or so to finish) The sun was very hot and some of us were even sunburnt!

But the hard work was paid off.

The chief (the person in-charge) gave us a briefing. We listened to him.

We also saw a very large parrot. His owner said that it is too fat and cannot fly properly. We should not eat too much like this parrot, or else we will grow fat and unhealthy.

Have you ever watched the news or seen your parents reading the newspapers, and seen news about oil spills? And the poor animals who are hurt in the process.

We humans have caused quite alot of damage to the animals.

This poor oil covered seagull is only one in the many animals we have hurt. And there are many many more who will soon be extinct, because we are destroying their homes.

Some animals are already extinct, which means that we will never see these animals again.

It sounds impossible, but it's true, no one has seen them for some time and there will not be anymore of these animals. And more animals are going to become extinct if we don't do anything. Can you imagine never seeing a cute panda ever again?

Or a friendly dolphin?

Or a cute frog?

We must all start taking action to save the animals, by saving the Earth. Right now, the Earth is experiencing global warming, which makes the weather in some sountries very hot, but very cold in other countries. The animals can't adapt to these changes. Can you imagine a polar bear, with its thick fur, in the desert?

We should all try to save our environment by Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling, as well as conserving water. If we all work together and play our parts in saving the Earth, then maybe we can prevent these animals from becoming extinct.

Teachers have always told you during lessons to save the environment. But why must we do that?

More and more trees are being cut down everyday by big machines. This process is called Deforestation.

All the smoke that is created from deforestation is bad for the environment. Smoke pollutes the environment, making the air that we breathe in everyday very dirty.

Without trees, there will be little greenery. Can you imagine Singapore without trees? It would not be beautiful anymore, right?
Without trees, the weather will get hotter and hotter.

Temperatures will rise.

Do you want to be sweaty like him everyday? Nobody would want to go to the beach, or to the park to fly kites anymore. Because the weather is too hot.

Trees are our friends, they help to make the Earth cleaner by lowering temperature and creating oxygen for us to live. We must save trees.

Trees are cut down to produce paper. We can recycle paper. Do you remember the 3 Rs that you learn in school? Reuse, Reduce, Recycle.

Remember, trees produce oxygen. Oxygen is a kind of air that is very important for us. Without oxygen to breathe, we will die.

Next, let's look at the pictures below.

Do you want to drink water from such a dirty river? If the water is not treated, meaning that the water is being drunk straightaway from the river, we will have stomachache and it will be very painful.

Thankfully for us, Singapore's reservoir is very clean. The water taken from the reservoir is clean. This is because the water is being treated. Treating water means that people add special chemicals to the water to make it clean by destroying bacteria and other harmful things.

Also, we must reduce our use of water. Imagine a world without water, you cannot go swimming with Mummy, Daddy and friends.

swimming Pictures, Images and Photos

You have no clean water to drink.

We can save water by

#1. Turning off the tap when you are not using it.
#2. Use half flush instead of a full flush.
#3. Water used for washing rice can be used to water the plants, so do not just throw the water away.

This way, we can save our environment.

So please remember, we must save our environment because it is our home! (:
